THE WEEKLY HYPELETTER - 18/08/2023

We take a look into the new Affinity System.

TL;DR

We’ve encountered a few bumps along the way in writing and releasing our newsletters over the past weeks. As we strive to deliver insightful and engaging updates, we’re considering a shift in our approach to ensure you receive more in-depth content. We delve into this topic later in this newsletter.

Over this past week, we’ve been implementing the Affinity System. This system brings some new toys that players will be able to explore. Later on in this newsletter, we’ll provide you with a snapshot of what you can expect from this system.

Newsletter Content Challenges

We want to be transparent, which is why we want to share some insights into the challenges we’ve faced regarding these newsletters over the past week.

Last week, we encountered difficulties in writing our newsletters. To be honest, we encounter these difficulties quite often. We realized that while we want to keep you updated, the nature of our ongoing development means that we can’t always disclose all the intricate details of our progress week to week. We wanted to strike a balance between providing meaningful updates and safeguarding the hype that awaits.

As a result of these considerations, you might have noticed that our recent newsletters have been on the shorter side. We deeply apologize for any disappointment this may have caused. We were just trying to maintain the regular cadence of newsletters.

We value your input, which is why we turned to our community on Twitter for guidance. We ran a poll to gauge your preferences regarding the frequency and depth of our newsletters. The options were ‘frequent but short‘ versus ‘sparse but detailed‘ newsletters. The majority of votes leaned towards ‘sparse but detailed‘ newsletters. This feedback does resonate with our intention to provide in-depth insights into our progress and decisions, even if it means slightly less frequent updates.

We have considered some options like moving to a biweekly newsletter or even releasing a newsletter once a month. This would give us more time to flesh things out internally and really give you the juicy stuff when we release a newsletter. A decision will be made by next week.

Creating the Affinity System

Think of an Affinity as an elemental power that your Player Character can harness and wield. These powers open the door to a wide range of possibilities for combat, allowing you to customize your playstyle to a whole new level.

Each Affinity brings with it some capabilities that can redefine the way you approach challenges:

  • Passive Ability – this type ability persists while the Affinity is equipped. It provides subtle yet impactful enhancements that seamlessly blend into your gameplay experience while you utilise the Affinity.
  • Ultimate Ability – this unique ability places your Player Character into an ‘ultimate’ state. Each Ultimate Ability can behave differently when activated e.g. you become empowered with a special set of attacks. These abilities are a force to be reckoned with, however they must be ‘charged up’ through gameplay before they can be activated.
  • Affinity Tree – allocate a certain number of points to unlock nodes on this tree, each offering a diverse range of abilities and perks. These trees will allows you to sculpt your playstyle to match your preferences and tactics.

For the polished demo, we’re excited to introduce you to not just one, but three unique Affinities. Each holds its own elemental flair, providing you with an array of powers to experiment with. This diversity is intentional, encouraging you to craft and fine-tune your distinct playstyle. We’re eagerly looking forward to what builds and strategies players will come up with when they dive into the polished demo.
